Meet Coal...

Meet Coal.

Coal was successfully trapped this morning, January 25th, by Animal Control (they have been trying for a LONG time to catch him). We became aware of Coal’s dilemma in December when residents of the community noticed this cat they had been feeding for 7 years had wire around him and was visibly in trouble. Last week we tried to assist before the huge storm, Jonas, hit New Jersey. When the Animal Control Officer finally got him, they removed what appeared to be a snare trap. These snares are commonly used to trapping fox (we are surprised these are even legal!!!). Luckily for Coal, it was not just around his neck, but was also around his right front leg. We asked to be contacted if Coal was caught so we could get him vetted and try to save his life.

Once we got him to our vet they put him under anesthesia to assess his injuries. Sadly, the snare embedded itself into his "armpit" area. Luckily, he and the skin seem to be healthy. Coal made it through 2 hours of surgery and the wound repair is said to look "pretty good!".  He first had a bath, was then debrided (the removal of dead or infected skin), sutured and had 2 drains put in. He was also neutered and given a long acting antibiotic.

Our hope is that we can return Coal to the community of people who have been feeding him. We will continue to assess him as we focus on getting him well.
